
Canadian violinist Julie Ju Ree Lin, born in Korea, is an active performer and educator whose work spans orchestral, chamber, solo, and community-focused music making. She is the recipient of the 2024 Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award and has also earned top prizes at the National Music Festival of Canada and the Canadian Music Competition. She has appeared on major international stages including Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall. As a soloist, she has performed with orchestras such as the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Surrey Symphony Orchestra, and PRISMA Festival Orchestra, and has been featured on concert series such as the Colburn Chamber Music Society, Vancouver Westcoast Music Society, Da Camera Houston, and Taiwan’s Friday Night Concert Series.
As an orchestral musician, Julie has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and Pacific Symphony. During her training, she served as concertmaster and principal second violin with the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, Music Academy of the West Orchestra, Colburn Conservatory Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Young Artists Orchestra. Her orchestral development has been shaped through work with concertmasters including Noah Bendix-Balgley, Nathan Cole, and Glenn Dicterow. She has performed under the batons of distinguished conductors including Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
A passionate chamber musician, Julie has collaborated with artists such as Jean-Yves Thibaudet, David Chan, Demarre McGill, Andres Cárdenes, and members of the Tokyo, St. Lawrence, and Calidore String Quartets. Her chamber performances have taken place across North America and Europe, including appearances at international festivals and major concert venues. She is also deeply engaged in contemporary music, having worked with ensembles such as Kinetic Ensemble and the Colburn Contemporary Ensemble, and is committed to the performance and advocacy of new works by living composers.
Teaching and community engagement are central to Julie’s artistic life. She has over a decade of private teaching experience, and her students have been accepted to leading conservatories and universities and have earned prizes in regional and national competitions. She has served as a teaching artist and mentor at Tallowood Academy of Fine Arts, NUVO Music School, Powell River Academy of Music, and through mentorship programs at the Vancouver Academy of Music and Sea to Sky ChamberFest. She has worked as a teaching assistant to Paul Kantor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and at the Meadowmount School of Music. In Los Angeles, she has been a teaching artist with the Colburn Center for Innovation and Community Impact, including the Jumpstart Program and partnerships with the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles. As a member of Street Symphony, she has collaborated with musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Opera in outreach performances. Julie has also led workshops and teaching residencies in Taiwan and Canada and has maintained long-standing
musical engagement with hospitals and senior centers in her hometown of White Rock, British Columbia.
In addition to her classical work, Julie has performed in the Los Angeles recording and film industry, contributing to film and television soundtracks and studio projects.
Julie is currently an Artist Diploma candidate at The Glenn Gould School of Music, where her studies include a pedagogy emphasis. She holds a Master of Music degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where she studied with Paul Kantor, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Martin Beaver.
